Betty Jane Zbinden, age 97, a life long resident of Hegewisch and a beacon of love and kindness, departed this life on Thursday, June 19, 2025. Born on November 26, 1927, Betty's nearly a century of life was marked by an unwavering commitment to her family, her work, and her community.
The beloved wife of the late Arthur A. Zbinden, Betty's love story with Arthur was one for the ages, filled with devotion and partnership. She was the loving mother of Arthur “Archie” Zbinden, Daniel Zbinden, Linda Aloia, and Leonard “Lenny” Zbinden. Betty's role as a mother was one she cherished deeply, nurturing her children with a blend of strength and tenderness that left an indelible mark on their hearts.
Her warmth extended to her grandchildren, Eric (Diane) Zbinden, Justine (Curt) Miller, Jennifer “Jenny” (Dennis) Laurincik, Michelle “Shelly” (Bernard “Barney”) Begeske, Patricia “Tricia” Zbinden, Vanessa Aloia, Samantha Zbinden, and Maddison Zbinden. She reveled in their accomplishments and milestones, always offering a listening ear and wise counsel. As a caring great grandmother to Eric Zbinden, Cortney Zbinden, Joseph “Joey” Zbinden, Kyle Zbinden, Karli Miller, Hunter Laurincik, Maddux Laurincik, Bradley (Kari) Begeske, Alicia (Steve) Cremonesi, Connor Begeske, Abigail “Abby” Begeske, Haley Mack, and Skyler Mack, Betty's legacy of love continued to flourish. With the arrival of her great-great-grandchildren, Palmer Begeske and Leo, her joy multiplied, knowing that the family tree she helped to root would continue to grow for generations.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, leaving behind not just a family, but a community that will deeply feel her absence. She will be remembered as a dear aunt to many nieces and nephews, each of whom carries a piece of her spirit forward.
In addition to her role as a matriarch, Betty served as the President of the VFW Lady's Auxiliary and as a member of the Daughters of Isabella. Her dedication to these organizations reflected her broader commitment to service and to supporting those who served. Her leadership was characterized by her thoughtfulness and her ability to inspire those around her to give back to their community. Her memory will continue to be a guiding light for all who had the privilege of knowing her. Betty's journey on this earth has ended, but the impact of her life's work and the love she shared will endure forever.
