Harriet "Babe" Whitely, formerly of Hegewisch and most recently a resident of Monon, Indiana, passed away peacefully at her home with family by her side on November 28, 2025, at the age of 86. She was born on June 19, 1939, to Thurman Wade "Shorty" Shields and Martha Evelyn Gallagher Shields.

Harriet was the beloved wife of the late Delis "Dee" Whitely, whose memory she cherished throughout her life. She was a loving mother to her three sons: Monnie (Jeana) Whitely and Dale (Ellen) Whitely, both of Chicago, Illinois, Mark (Kim) Whitely of Waterman, Illinois. Her family was her pride and joy; she found immense fulfillment in the roles of mother and grandmother. Harriet is remembered as a caring grandmother to Eric Whitely, Mathew Whitely, Charlotte Whitely, Jeffery Whitely, Max Whitely, Alex Whitely, and Mark Dancer, who will all carry her spirit forward in their hearts.

A dear sister, Harriet is survived by her sister Georgine (Dan) Flynn of Crown Point, Indiana. She was preceded in death by several beloved siblings: Thurman "Buster" (Mary) Shields of Studenville, Ohio; Harold "Gene" (Ellen) Shields of Valrico, Florida; Laurie "Bub" (Pat) Shields Sr. of Riverview, Florida; Alverta "Toe" (Regis) Steighner of Herman, Pennsylvania; Doris "Dory" (Anthony) Carben of North Butler, Pennsylvania; Martha Dalkos of East Butler, Pennsylvania; and Jeannette "Net" (Marion) Goughler of Chicago.

As an aunt, Harriet was a guiding presence and source of support to many nieces and nephews, affectionately embracing her extended family.

Harriet "Babe" Whitely's presence will be profoundly missed by all who knew her. Her kindness, warmth, and devotion to her family will be cherished and remembered.
